ABOUT US: Young, Black and Lit is a non-profit organization that works to increase access to children’s books that center, reflect, and affirm the experiences of Black children by providing free books to youth in pre-K through eighth grade. To date, YBL has provided over 70,000 books to families nationwide.


JOB SUMMARY: We are looking for a Grant Writer to join our team on a project/contract basis and lead our efforts in securing funding to support our signature Lit Monthly Program which provides free books to organizations nationwide. This position is responsible for conducting the full range of grants management activities required to research, cultivate, prepare, submit, and manage grant proposals to foundation, government, and corporate sources.


  • Works under the leadership of the Board Co-Chair to ensure grant activity supports YBL’s mission and goals.

  • Researches and identifies grant prospects at the state and national level

  • Write, submit and manage grant proposals

  • Furnish prospective funders with supporting documents

  • Track and maintain grant submission and reporting deadlines

  • Maintain accurate records of all grant activities

  • Keep staff informed of deadlines and responsibilities for seamless workflow.


  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred but not required in Communications, Journalism, Media, Non-Profit Management, Creative Writing or related field

  • Minimum of 1-years’ experience in grant writing, prospect research, general fundraising or comparable and transferable skills acquired in a professional setting

  • Proficient with measuring and reaching income goals

  • Excellent knowledge of fundraising information sources

  • Exceptional organizational and writing skills

  • Understanding of donor market, willingness to research markets outside of Illinois and nationally

  • Strong computer and Internet proficiency, including but not limited to Microsoft Office,
    Google G-Suite, social media tools, and database applications

  • Self motivated and proactive

  • Passion for our mission and a desire to make a difference in the community
